Vendors Add AI to Challenge Rippling

The real pressure on Rippling is not feature parity in payroll or HR, it is whether smaller suite vendors can turn narrow footholds into broader systems of record. Rippling wins by putting payroll, HR, IT, and workflows on one employee graph, so a hire, pay change, or departure updates every downstream system at once. Rivals are responding by adding AI inside existing workflows and stretching into adjacent modules so customers can buy fewer separate tools.1 2 3 4 5

• BambooHR shows the clearest copycat pattern. It now layers Bamboo AI into reports, payroll review, scheduling, and data cleanup, and it has added Managed Payroll Services, an add on where BambooHR specialists handle validations, taxes, and compliance sensitive payroll work.4 5
• Gusto is broadening from payroll into a larger SMB bundle. Its customer base passed 500,000 SMBs, and that base now buys more benefits, 401(k), and compliance products, driving about $975M of 2025 revenue. That is the same basic playbook of deeper attach on top of payroll, but still centered on the US SMB employer stack.6 7
• The challengers are still narrower than Rippling in different ways. Paylocity is extending payroll into AI, spend management, and workforce tools for US employers. Personio and HiBob are stronger in Europe and people operations, while Remote powers embedded employer of record inside BambooHR and Personio, showing that some suite expansion is still partner assembled rather than fully native.8 9 10 11

The next phase is a race to own more of the daily operating loop around an employee, not just the employee file. Vendors that can turn AI into real workflow completion, and add payroll, compliance, and adjacent services without breaking the product, will move closer to Rippling.
