OpenAI is trying to turn ChatGPT from a place people visit for answers into a place where they finish office work. Spreadsheet and presentation editing matter because they keep users inside ChatGPT for higher value tasks like modeling, reporting, and preparing client materials, which supports pricier Business and Enterprise seats, larger bundle deals, and more daily usage than simple chat or search.

The product shift is concrete. ChatGPT now includes built in spreadsheet and presentation workflows, and as of March 5, 2026 OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Excel in beta so users can build or update live workbooks with formulas, scenarios, and cell level traceability instead of copying outputs from chat into Excel by hand.

The next step is a fuller AI office suite where chat, files, research, spreadsheets, slides, and agents all live in one workspace. If OpenAI keeps pulling real work into that surface, ChatGPT becomes harder to replace, and subscription revenue moves closer to traditional software budget lines rather than discretionary AI experimentation.
