Shopify's AI threatened by Anthropic
Gaurav Agarwal, COO of ClickUp, on how AI is redrawing the competitive map in productivity
This reveals that vertical AI in commerce is only defensible if Shopify keeps turning merchant context into something a general model cannot easily match. Shopify has a real edge inside its own admin because Sidekick can see store data, respect permissions, analyze orders and products, build automations, and generate apps and theme changes in place. But the underlying model layer is improving fast, and Shopify itself positions Sidekick as a business aware interface on top of broader AI capabilities.

Shopify has proprietary workflow context that Claude alone does not. Sidekick works inside the merchant admin, can access store specific data, remembers prior conversations, respects staff permissions, and can act on orders, products, reports, automations, and apps.

The risk from Anthropic is not that it becomes better project management software. The risk is that frontier models get good enough at drafting, reasoning, and task execution that Shopify's product layer starts to look like distribution and data access wrapped around a commodity brain.

This pattern already shows up elsewhere. In legal, Harvey moved toward a multi model workflow product, while in coding Anthropic became the backbone for tools like Cursor and Bolt. That suggests value often shifts from the raw model into the product that owns workflow, memory, and approval steps.
The next phase is a race to own both context and interface. Shopify is pushing Sidekick deeper into merchant operations and agentic commerce, while model labs keep climbing the stack toward more complete task execution. The winners will be the products that combine privileged data, embedded workflow, and the best available model without forcing users to choose only one layer.
