This points to a move from cost accounting into capital allocation for AI. Once a company can tie model spend to a feature, customer cohort, or workflow, the question shifts from what did AI cost to which AI use cases create margin, retention, or expansion. CloudZero is built for that shift because it already combines provider level cost data with business dimensions like customer, feature, and project, then layers AI specific usage data from OpenAI and Anthropic on top.

The practical workflow is product finance, not just infrastructure reporting. A team can map token or model spend to a support copilot, code assistant, or search feature, then compare that spend against adoption, conversion, or revenue by segment. That makes cost per feature and cost per customer actionable operating metrics, not just dashboard vanity metrics.

This is harder than standard cloud FinOps because AI bills are metered in tokens, model calls, and GPU heavy workloads that often sit outside normal cloud tags. CloudZero added dedicated OpenAI and Anthropic connectors in September 2025, and its OpenAI integration explicitly combines cost and usage data so teams can calculate cost per model, token, customer, and environment.

The competitive split is becoming clearer. Pump is moving up from the billing layer into dashboards and operations, while CloudZero starts with allocation and unit economics. That leaves CloudZero better positioned where buyers need to answer whether an AI feature should be expanded, repriced, or shut off, not just whether the bill went up.
From here, the category should move toward AI spend systems that connect infrastructure metering, product usage, and financial outcomes in one loop.
