The core bet is that Carbon can make a clinic network behave a little more like software, with each doctor and medical assistant handling more visits and less paperwork than in a typical urgent care chain. CarbyOS puts scheduling, charting, billing, and follow up in one system, and Carbon says AI note taking cut documentation time by about 75% and lifted patient throughput by around 30% in pilots. That matters because urgent care margins usually get eaten by labor, billing friction, and half full clinics, not by lack of demand alone.

  • Traditional urgent care operators like CityMD and GoHealth usually have better payer contracts and steadier clinic utilization, but they often run fragmented software and outsourced billing. Carbon is trying to win by tightening the daily workflow inside the clinic, not by changing what urgent care is.
  • The software layer also supports a second revenue stream beyond one off visits. Remote monitoring, chat follow ups, and care plans for diabetes or hypertension let Carbon bill care management fees and pursue shared savings when patients avoid ER visits and control chronic conditions better.
  • This leverage has limits because the cost base is still physical. New clinics can take 18 to 24 months to mature, Carbon expanded heavily during Covid, and the business was still losing $64 per visit before its February 2, 2026 Chapter 11 filing. Software helps utilization and staffing efficiency, but it does not erase leases, compliance, or underused rooms.

Going forward, the highest value version of this model is not simply owning more clinics. It is using clinics as data producing care hubs, then pushing the operating system into payer contracts, chronic care programs, and potentially third party locations. If that works, Carbon shifts from selling visits to selling lower cost care delivery at scale.
