Amazon Supply Chain vs ShipBob
ShipBob
Amazon is turning fulfillment into a seller lock in tool, not just a shipping service. Supply Chain by Amazon lets merchants send one pool of inventory into Amazon’s network, use that same stock for Amazon orders and off Amazon orders, and add upstream services like transportation and warehousing. That makes Amazon look less like one sales channel and more like the operating system underneath a merchant’s whole logistics stack, which is exactly where ShipBob competes.1 2 3 4 5
- For a seller, the practical appeal is simple. Inventory goes into Amazon fulfillment centers, orders can come from a brand site, another marketplace, or social commerce, and Amazon picks, packs, and ships them, often in unbranded packaging. That removes the need to split stock across separate 3PLs and reduces the risk of being out of stock in one channel while overstocked in another.1 2 3
- Amazon has moved beyond just off Amazon order fulfillment. Its broader supply chain suite now includes inbound transportation, warehousing, distribution, parcel shipping, and bulk replenishment to non Amazon destinations. That is the same bundle a merchant might otherwise stitch together from a freight forwarder, a warehouse operator, and a 3PL like ShipBob.4 5 6
- ShipBob’s counter position is that it is built for non Amazon commerce first. Research on ShipBob frames the company around Shopify, TikTok Shop, and other non Amazon channels, with revenue tied to receiving pallets, storage, pick and pack labor, and shipping. The competitive line is clear, Amazon is extending inward from marketplace sellers, while ShipBob is extending outward from independent merchants.6 7
The next step is Amazon using Prime grade logistics as the wedge to win more of the merchant relationship outside its marketplace. As Amazon opens these services to more businesses and channels, fulfillment stops being a back end vendor choice and becomes a distribution power struggle over who owns the merchant’s inventory, order flow, and economics across all of ecommerce.1 4 5 6
