Shein pushes Zara upmarket

Diving deeper into

Shein

Company Report
Shein's success has allowed Zara to maintain growth by shifting its positioning upmarket
Analyzed 5 sources

Shein made the bottom of fast fashion so brutally cheap and fast that Zara could grow by selling a cleaner, more expensive version of the same impulse buy. Zara still moves quickly, but it now wins more with better stores, tighter edits, higher average prices, and sustainability features like repair and resale, while Shein floods the market with thousands of daily new items and factory direct pricing that legacy chains cannot match.1 2 4 5

  • The split shows up in the numbers. Shein reached an estimated $32.2B of revenue in 2023, up 40% YoY, while Zara, within Inditex, did about €26.1B, up 10%, and H&M group grew 6%. Shein expanded the market for trend driven bargain shopping, but it hit H&M harder than Zara.1 2 3 5
  • Zara’s edge is not lower cost than Shein. It is a more controlled shopping experience. Customers browse curated racks in prime urban stores, buy items that feel more fashion led and less disposable, and increasingly see services like Zara Pre-Owned that support a more responsible image.2 4
  • This is why the valuation gap opened. Inditex traded around a 4.7x sales multiple against Shein near 2x and Boohoo near 0.27x in the 2023 comparison set. Investors rewarded Zara for proving fast fashion can still grow with better margins and stronger brand perception, not just more units sold.2 5

Going forward, Shein is likely to keep owning the global price and selection extreme, while Zara keeps climbing toward premium fast fashion with more brand, service, and circularity layered on top. The market is separating into two lanes, one built on infinite cheap choice, and one built on edited choice that feels worth paying up for.1 2 4
