Volume Over Autonomy in Ground Robots

The central tradeoff is between price, available production capacity, reliability in combat and the amount of human supervision required.

This market is being won less by the smartest robot and more by the robot that can be built in volume, survive a few real missions, and still be simple enough for a soldier to supervise under fire. In Ukraine, most ground robots are still used for hauling supplies, casualty evacuation, and engineering jobs, where low cost and quick replacement matter more than full autonomy. That is why locally built systems like Ratel, Tencore, and Roboneers have an edge over heavier Western platforms.1 2 3 4 5 6

  • Tencore shows what buyers reward in practice. Its TerMIT platform has more than 2,500 units deployed, and even in 2026 only a very small number were reportedly used in direct combat roles. That points to a market centered on dependable logistics robots first, with armed autonomy still a narrower use case.2 3 5
  • Production capacity is now a procurement variable in its own right. Ukraine’s UGV sector grew from $43M of output in 2024 to $252M in 2025, and the Defense Procurement Agency said 2025 deliveries of ground robotic systems exceeded planned orders. A robot that is good enough and available now can beat a better robot that ships slowly.1 4 6
  • Human supervision is still the hidden cost. More autonomous systems promise fewer operators per vehicle, but combat conditions in jammed, damaged, messy terrain still push units toward remote operation and close oversight. That favors simpler platforms that are easier to train on, repair fast, and accept as partly expendable.1 5 7

The next step is a split market. Cheap, mass produced Ukrainian robots will keep taking routine frontline jobs, while autonomy software becomes the upgrade layer that reduces operator burden on the best existing platforms. The winners are likely to be manufacturers that combine wartime production speed with software that helps one operator safely manage more machines at once.1 2 4 8
