Hightouch escaped the collapse of its category by converting itself into a “composable CDP” for marketers.

Hightouch won by moving up from plumbing to outcomes. Reverse ETL moved rows from a warehouse into apps, but marketers do not buy row syncing, they buy audiences, triggered campaigns, and better ad spend. By rebuilding the CDP around the warehouse, Hightouch kept the flexibility of SQL and custom models while packaging it in a workflow marketers could actually run without waiting on a data team.

  • Classic CDPs like Segment centralized collection and routing inside their own schema. The warehouse native model flipped that, data lived in Snowflake or BigQuery, teams modeled customers in SQL, then synced segments and traits outward. Hightouch turned that architectural shift into a marketer facing product instead of selling sync pipes alone.
  • The reverse ETL category narrowed because it solved a real problem but not a big enough standalone budget line. The surviving path was bundling activation with a clearer ROI story, where a buyer could tie spend to lift in conversion, retention, or paid media efficiency. That is the same logic behind Hightouch expanding into CDP rather than remaining a connector tool.
  • This also changed the competitive set. Instead of only fighting Census on sync reliability, Hightouch moved into overlap with Segment, Twilio Engage, Customer.io, Braze, and Klaviyo, products used directly by marketing teams. That put it closer to the budget owner and made expansion easier, because every new audience, destination, and campaign workflow can add seat and platform spend.

The next step is deeper consolidation of the warehouse, CDP, and campaign layer into one operating surface for marketers. Hightouch is heading toward a world where the same system defines the customer, picks the audience, generates the message, and pushes it into ad and messaging channels, which makes the warehouse native CDP look less like a data tool and more like a full marketing operating system.
