Threads' Instagram Scale Advantage
Bluesky
Threads’ biggest edge is not better product design, it is zero to low cost distribution and instant monetization. Meta can turn Instagram accounts into Threads accounts with an imported follow graph, then sell Threads inventory through the same ad system marketers already use across Facebook and Instagram. That means faster user growth, a feed that feels populated on day one, and revenue that does not depend on Bluesky first building a standalone ad machine.
-
Threads was tied to Instagram from launch, letting users sign up with an Instagram account and carry over follows. That removed the hardest part of starting a social network, which is giving new users people to read and post to immediately. Bluesky has grown mostly through migration waves, invites, and word of mouth.
-
Meta began opening Threads ads to all eligible advertisers in April 2025. In practice, that lets a brand buyer add Threads placements inside Meta’s existing ad workflow instead of learning a new system, setting budgets with a new rep, or waiting for a new market to mature.
-
Scale compounds on both sides of the marketplace. More users attract more creators and publishers, more ad demand funds product development, and Instagram gives Threads a built in funnel for all three. Bluesky has product momentum and protocol openness, but not the same cross app traffic engine or advertiser base.
Going forward, the gap is likely to widen unless Bluesky finds a monetization model that fits a smaller but more committed network. Threads can keep converting Meta’s existing attention, ad demand, and creator relationships into growth. Bluesky’s path is to turn openness, better curation, and tighter communities into a durable alternative, not to outscale Meta on Meta’s terms.
