The key strategic point is that OpenWrench is using marketplace structure to win customers, without yet taking marketplace economics. It sits in the middle of commercial maintenance workflows, helping multi site operators find and manage vendors, but charges software fees instead of a percentage of every job. That makes the pitch simple for chains that are used to paying managed marketplace fees, and it gives OpenWrench room to add provider side software later, once demand is already concentrated on its platform.

  • Commercial maintenance is different from residential field service because the buyer, operator, and payer are often different people. That creates coordination work, approvals, and analytics needs, which favors software sold to the client side, not just a tool for the contractor in the truck.
  • ServiceTitan shows the upside of owning the provider workflow. It started with contractor software for scheduling, dispatch, payments, and upsells, then expanded across trades and products. OpenWrench is approaching from the opposite side, starting with the enterprise buyer and pulling providers in through demand.

From here, the market is likely to converge toward dual sided systems. The winning product will not just help a chain open tickets and find vendors, or help a contractor dispatch technicians. It will connect both sides in one workflow, then layer on payments, integrations, and provider software to capture more of the transaction over time.
