Networks Converging on Shared Stablecoin

Stripe

Company Report
the major networks are converging on a shared asset rather than competing closed-loop rails

Open USD matters because it shifts the stablecoin fight from who owns the wallet or card rail to who controls the dollar asset that everyone settles into. Stripe already has the picks and shovels for that stack. Bridge issues the token, Open Issuance lets platforms launch branded dollars on top, and Tempo gives Stripe a native settlement layer, so a shared industry coin pulls more volume onto Stripe’s infrastructure instead of forcing it to back someone else’s asset.1 2 3 4 5

  • Closed loop systems like PayPal or Cash App win by getting both consumers and merchants onto one rail. Stablecoin payments are going the other direction. Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe are staying open on distribution, then standardizing on a common token underneath. That makes the asset, not the app, the coordination point.3 5
  • This is a direct answer to Circle’s advantage. Circle makes most of its money from reserve income on USDC and shares roughly half of that economics with Coinbase for distribution. Open USD copies that playbook at industry scale by pairing BlackRock backed reserves with revenue sharing across card networks, exchanges, and merchant channels.4 5
  • The bigger strategic change is interoperability. Stablecoin infrastructure providers have argued that payments work best when liquidity concentrates in a small number of widely accepted coins, because fragmented issuer specific dollars behave like gift cards. A consortium coin backed by major networks is an attempt to manufacture that shared liquidity from day one.2 5

If this model works, stablecoins start looking less like separate fintech products and more like a new settlement substrate that card networks, processors, wallets, and banks all plug into. That favors Stripe, because it has already assembled the issuer, wallet, and chain infrastructure needed to sit in the middle of that flow, even if the winning coin is shared rather than proprietary.1 2 3 5
